I awoke, screaming. Lucas came tearing into the room like I was being kidnapped again.
“Daisy!” He clicked on the light.
I already had tears running down my cheeks. “Lucas…”
“What happened?”
“I… A dream. You were…dead.”
My crying turned to harsh sobbing, and he came to sit beside me and wrapped me in a hug.
“It was just a dream.”
“No. It was in color.”
He moved away. “In color?”
I nodded. “Only the visions are in color…except the one you gave me about Jess and then the one with the dull colors.”
“Dull colors? Which one was that?”
I pursed my lips. “The one where you were a cat.”
“Oh.” He sighed. “The colors were dull because it took a lot of my energy to come to you as something other than human. You accept me as a human easier.”
“Lucas, this was a vision. I can feel it.”
He nodded and sighed as if he wasn’t sure what to say. “Tell me what happened.”
“It was so terrible,” I began, trying to control my breathing. “I was in the field, and I saw you there, but it was like I was a ghost, like you couldn’t see me. Kristoff was there too, and…” I broke off, trying to catch my breath.
“Go on.”
“He…he killed you, Lucas. He stabbed you.”
“Daisy, Kristoff would never—”
“I know. But it was in color, Lucas. That means something. Maybe it won’t be Kristoff. Maybe it will be The Order.”
“Daisy, nothing is going to happen to me.”
“You don’t know that.”
“It was just a dream.”
“Then why the colors?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know. When was the last time you dreamed in black and white?”
I thought for a moment, looking back. “I think…just right after the accident.”
“Daisy, it’s possible all your dreams are in color now. I will be fine.”
I wanted to believe him more than anything. After all, it did make sense. But I was still shaking from fear and grief. I didn’t want to think about the possibility of losing him. It was agonizing. I tried to believe him. I had to, at least until there was another reason why I shouldn’t.
I leaned against him. “I love you, Lucas.”
I twisted to see the look on his face. I could feel his heart beating against me, and his face turned that familiar shade of gray.
“I love you, Daisy. As I always have.”
Lucas helped me go back to sleep, but he didn’t leave the room. He was asleep on the floor beside the bed. I would have preferred he sleep beside me, but he insisted on being a gentleman by keeping his distance. I slept well with no other nightmares.
The next morning while I was only half awake, I remembered the dream of Kristoff with the knife. I remembered beautiful Lucas dead in the grass. I winced momentarily and felt the pressure of a hand on my shoulder. I opened my eyes, and Lucas was sitting in bed beside me.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
I nodded. “Yeah. Fine.”
“Another dream?”
“No. I promise.”
“You can tell me.”
I shook my head. “Really. I was thinking about the nightmare I had.
